A wine inspired by the true story of thousands of 19th century free travelers who willingly journeyed by sea from London to the far side of the world in 1886. Instead they arrived at Port Misery, South Australia… a dark swamp like place of lawlessness, low morals and high vice, far from the promising new beginnings they sought. At that moment they thought, if HOPE had brought them here, to this dismal place, then surely this was “Hopes End.” And so, it was named.

A collaboration between Joel Gott and Charles Bieler, Shatter is an obsession with Grenache and terroir. To date, it has been singularly focused on old vine, dry farmed Grenache grown in schist soils in the arid and hot valley of Maury in the Roussillon region of France. The hillside Grenache vines were planted over 60 years ago in 100% pure black schist, a slate-like, rocky soil common to the area. Though nutrient-poor, it retains heat well, allowing the slow-ripening Grenache to reach full maturity through cool nights.

There is, perhaps, no greater inspiration for a winemaker than nature itself. Joel Gott, Charles Bieler and Roger Scommegna share a passion for the beauty and exhilaration of the natural world, and together we look to some of the most dramatic backdrops on Earth to create the multi-dimensional wines of The Show. Whether close to home in the rolling hills of California or at the foothills of the Andes Mountains in Argentina, we go to the places where nature delivers stunning landscapes and remarkable vineyards. When nature puts on a show, you just have to watch.
