Southern Napa, like its neighbor, Carneros, is open to the cooling influence of the San Pablo Bay, so grapes grown here ripen slowly, developing concentrated flavors. Vera’s vineyard, named to honor Vera Trinchero-Torres, has a cool microclimate and chalky soils ideal for producing classic, fruit-focused Chardonnay.
Universally speaking, 2015 produced lower yields but excellent quality and concentration. Due in part to the drought, but more so an extended period of cool weather during the bloom period in May and June, our grape clusters were on the lighter side and our berries stayed smaller with thicker skins. The consistently warm summer led to slightly earlier-than-normal ripening on the valley floor and high-stress conditions in our mountain vineyards. The resulting wines are beautifully fruity and focused with terrific acidity.
“There’s a first time for everything: The inaugural vintage of our Vera’s Vineyard Chardonnay was 100% barrel fermented in French oak (50% new). We stir the lees weekly while the wine is undergoing 100% malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 16 months in the same barrels. The aromas that greet the nose are those of a bowl of fresh fruit with hints of melon, honey, white peach and citrus blossom inviting you in to discover more. Fruit flavors pass to the palate along with notes of golden apple and nectarines where moderate acidity provides the backbone for a full and round structure. The barrel aging provides an almost oily viscosity that allows the flavors to linger on the palate for quite some time resulting in a long, soft finish.“ – Mario Monticelli
