Owned by the Fonseca family of Galicia, Spain, Quinta Sardonia was founded in 1998 by famed winemaker Peter Sisseck. Peter designed and supervised the creation of Quinta Sardonia, planting select red Bordeaux varietals just outside of the D.O. Ribera del Duero, ensuring he and the winery’s future winemaker would not be bound by the rigid guidelines governing the neighboring appellation. Today, head winemaker Christian Rey, who studied under Peter, continues the estate’s dedication to organic and biodynamic winemaking, making sure the upmost quality and attention to detail is used during production. The wines produced at Quinta Sardonia are classified as a Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon, or ‘Wine from the Land of Castilla y León’ and each bottling is considered to be a ‘multi-terroir, multi-varietal’ masterpiece, highly rated and in a class of their own.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Winemaker Christian Rey describes the 2017 Sardon as containing good aromatic intensity with notes of forest fruit and a touch of spice. On the palate, the wine is fresh, fruity and voluminous with well-integrated tannins and a refreshing mineral finish. As this wine is only partially aged in oak, it is fruit-forward, pleasant and enjoyable when served by the glass or paired with any type of food. Open and honest from the first sip, this wine could be your quintessential house red.
90 Points - James Suckling “Enticing vitality to this red with blueberries, citrus and fresh mulberries. The cherry fruit is soft and overt, but the firm tannins manage to mold it into a relatively compact shape. Essence-like on the finish.” — James Suckling
Vineyard Notes
Located within the “Golden Mile” of the Duero River that stretches across northern Spain, Quinta Sardonia’s vineyards lie at an impressive elevation of 1,600 ft, providing the perfect conditions for an extended phenolic maturation. Vineyards with the freshest and lightest soils are hand selected to make Quinta Sardonia’s entry-level wine, Sardón. Each plot is harvested separately, in line with the optimal aromatic maturity and natural acidity of the grapes. First produced in 2014, Sardón, is a unique blend of 95% Tempranillo, with a 5% mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Garnacha Tinta, Albillo, Syrah and/or Malbec in any given vintage. Carefully managed by winemaker Christian Rey, the head-pruned vines that go into making Sardón are planted in small blocks that are farmed both organically and biodynamically. Extraction is kept to a minimum and wine is fermented with wild yeast strains in order to preserve the wine’s most fruit-forward and aromatic aspects. Over 20 micro-fermentations are performed each year.
Vineyard Notes
The six different varieties used in making the 2017 Sardón are vinified according to the soil type in which they grown and then aged in a unique combination of neutral French oak barrels, 1,200-liter foudres and concrete eggs. The vinification and aging of each lot is carefully monitored, then blended and aged a few months additional months in concrete tanks prior to bottling.
Winemaker Notes
The 2017 vintage in Castilla y León was one of the driest in recent memory, with a mild winter giving way to a premature spring that promoted an early bud break. A hot and dry summer required an early start to harvest, which began on the 8th of September. In order to prevent over-ripening, harvest was performed meticulously block-by-block and in record time. Although the vintage’s disparate weather patterns resulted in a lower-than-normal production, it produced wines with great aromatic potential in the nose and a unique ‘freshness on the palate,’ due to the wine’s well-integrated acidity and soft tannin structure.
Other Notes
