Coco Rôtie Syrah Viognier 2018
10 months in new and seasoned French and American oak
Lush blueberry and stone fruit aromas lead to elegant layers of blackberry, apricot, and cloves. Full-bodied with complex notes of spice, this wine pairs well with blue and gorgonzola cheeses, grilled lamb and braised beef.
The Shiraz in our 2018 Coco Rôtie was sourced from three premium, family-owned vineyard operations located in McLaren Vale and Barossa, South Australia. One of the family’s vineyards, The Lloyd Brothers’ estate in Seaview, McLaren Vale,is considered to have some of the finest terroir in the district. Garnered from vineyards replicating the Rhône, the Viognier was grown in Adelaide Hills at elevations of 1,250 feet on north-east slopes.
Coco Rôtie is our Aussie expression of Cote-Rôtie AOC wines. The grapes enjoy 10–12 days maceration for added color and flavor. We then co-ferment Syrah with Viognier, like in the Northern Rhône Valley, and use open-top concrete fermenters with a heading down board to keep the cap submerged during fermentation. It is labor intensive but creates complex wines with added depth. Some of the Syrah is held back and placed in our open-top, temperature controlled stainless-steel fermenters. This allows us to pay close attention to detail in order to retain the wine’s primary fruit flavors. The wine is then aged for 10 months in new and seasoned, French and American oak to add complexity.
Varietal Composition: 96% Syrah, 4% Viognier
