Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The Terra d’Oro 2018 Petite Sirah is quintessential Amador County, with its rich,
powerful flavor. The nose boasts aromas of blueberry pie, clove, black olive and
mocha before giving way to steamed milk, rhubarb, violet and floral notes. The palate
is focused and captivating with generous, rustic tannins, pepper, cream and blueberry
compote. The flavors are complemented by an elegant, lingering finish. This wine
is a perfect fit with hearty meals such as Beef Wellington, Pot Roast, Beef Stew
or Shepherds Pie.
Vineyard Notes
Petite Sirah has been planted in California as far back as the 1880’s. Today, it is widely
used as a blending grape. Varietal bottlings of Petite Sirah are rare gems that highlight
the complex flavors of this unique grape. Fruit for the Terra d’Oro 2018 Petite Sirah
was handpicked from our vineyards in Amador County. This lot, specifically planted for
a varietal bottling of Petite Sirah, produces concentrated fruit with exceptional quality.
Winemaker Notes
Two different clones go into our Petite Sirah blend. The plantings consist of 50%
Clone 3 and 50% Clone 6. Clone 3 is a common clone in California, expressing
aromatics of blueberry and violets with a tannin structure that is more delicate for
Petite Sirah. Clone 6 expresses big robust tannins, a deep opaque purple hue and
aromatics of wet stone, salinity, and olives. The fragile grape clusters were handpicked
at first light, de-stemmed and partially crushed, leaving whole berries for fermentation
in stainless steel tanks. The fermenting grapes were pumped-over daily to enhance the
extraction of vivid color, flavor and aroma. After settling, the wine was aged in 15%
new American oak barrels for 14 months before bottling.
