Tasting Notes
The Terra d’Oro 2018 Barbera is lush and inviting, with aromas of bing cherry, plum,
violets, pomegranate, earth, vanilla and clove. Intermingling flavors of herbs and
fresh berries, and a round midpalate of fresh cherry lead into a clean finish of refined
tannins. With its natural acidity, the Barbera goes well with richer meats and game.
Vineyard Notes
Grown in northern Italy for more than 700 years, Barbera has been long celebrated
for its role in Barbera d’Alba and Barbera d’Asti. Italian immigrants brought the
variety in New World, where today it is often used in blended wines. But when grown
here in the rolling hills of Amador, Barbera yields an elegant wine with layers of fruit
and spice, worthy of being featured on its own. We blended Barbera from three of our
estate vineyards—Shenandoah, Veauta, Montevina—for this single-varietal bottling.
Winemaker Notes
The 2018 Barbera was fermented in stainless steel tanks and spent 45 days on the
skins with pumpovers to coax color and flavor from the grapes while giving the
wine a beautiful backbone of earthiness and structure. The wine was then aged for
12 months in a combination of French and American oak (20% new) to add well-integrated
aromas of toasty oak to the finished wine.
