Shatter Les Galets Grenache 2017

Flavors and aromas of black cherry, blackberry, licorice and spice. Generous mid palate with kirsch accents and a crunchy texture holds it all together.
Shatter Les Galets comes from the Côtes du Rhône Villages appellation located within the small town of Valréas, France. The Grenache vines were planted over 30 years ago, as a single block, 1,000 feet above the Rhone Valley floor in galets or river stones. The unique soil type forces the vines to grow deep into the earth, searching for water and nutrients to nourish their growth. The result is a slightly different expression of Grenache, one with silkier tannins and fuller mid-palate.
All the fruit is handpicked and goes through a cold oak for 3 days. After that, the tank is warmed up and fermentation starts spontaneously (native yeast). No stems are removed so the fruit is 100% whole cluster. We don’t do any punch downs and only pump over half of the tank’s volume once a day. When fermentation ends, we leave the wine on its skins for another 3 weeks. On this vintage, malolactic fermentation occurred during the 3 weeks on skins before the wine was totally dry. This is usually not the goal, but if it happens and you’re patient, it can be exciting. The wine was pressed and went in to neutral barrels for 2 years before bottling with little to no filtration or fining.
Valréas is the northern most point where Grenache is grown in the Rhone Valley. Everything else that is planted in the north is Syrah, as Grenache needs more heat to ripen, which hasn’t historically happened in Valréas due to the higher elevation. The increasingly warm vintages and earlier ripening means that this town of Valréas is starting to ripen Grenache beautifully following a long slow growing season (we pick late October).
