San Polo Library Selection Brunello di Montalcino 2012
Brunello di Montalcino
30 months in 10, 20 and 40 hl oak casks, followed by an additional 6 months in bottle before release.
Deep ruby red color with garnet hues, on the nose this wine reveals complex notes of prunes, ripe cherry and small red berries, along with subtle violet, balsamic and toast notes. Winemaker Riccardo Fratton describes this wine as “warm, with a close-knit, full-bodied texture, long finish and well-defined tannins.
Characterized as one of the best vintages in the last twenty years, the entire growing cycle of the vine took place under the best possible conditions. A cold winter with frequent, heavy rainfall gave way to a dry spring with temperatures that were slightly above average, allowing for a uniform bud break and ideal flowering. Summer showers were scarce, but heavy, aiding in the implementation of sustainable and environmentally friendly pest control and disease management. Hot, sunny days with optimal day-to-night temperature variations enabled clusters to achieve an ideal maturation by the end of September. Berries were perfectly healthy, acidity was high and the sugar concentration was more elevated than in previous years. San Polo’s Sangiovese harvest finished by the end of September, delivering healthy grape clusters with wonderfully thick skins, a prerequisite for long macerations and wines with great ageing potential.
Food Pairing Notes
The estate’s flagship Brunello will pair superbly with any kind of game or fowl, grilled meat and mature cheeses. As it is round on the palate, with well-integrated tannins, it will also pair well with any kind of international spiced cuisine. The estate recommends serving between 57-60° F and opening an hour before serving.
