Wine Profile
"The 2018 Russian River Valley Chardonnay from Bravium is a touch more aromatically complex than the Anderson Valley version, offering up a lovely nose of pear, apple, fruit blossoms, a lovely base of soil and a judicious framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, crisp and complex, with lovely mid-palate depth, zesty acids and fine length and grip on the ripe and bouncy finish. This comes in listed at the same 14.1 percent as the above, but my gut feeling is that it is just a touch riper. Good juice." - John Gilman, View From the Cellar
Vineyard Notes
Sourced from the cool-climate of the western portion of California’s Russian River Valley, the Reis Vineyard sits astride a ridgeline blanketed by fog and a view of the Pacific Ocean. This single vineyard Chardonnay is planted to Martini selections which–combined with the large diurnal shift experienced at Reis–allows for acidity to be retained during ripening. Shallow hillside soils also allow for ripening to occur at a relatively low degree Brix. The combination of these terroir attributes provide prototypical Chardonnay character and hallmark Bravium balance.
Production Notes
Favorable conditions at the start of the growing season– specifically bud break and flowering–in Russian River Valley were followed by uneventful weather throughout the year. Steady and even ripening allowed harvest to occur at precisely the right time, without any late-season heat spikes that had occurred in recent years. Grape yields were above average, and quality was exceptional in this temperate vintage.
Winemaker Notes
This bright and balanced wine perfectly reflects the cool-climate Russian River Valley vineyard where it was grown. Brilliant yellow-gold color, with fresh tree and tropical fruit aromas are highlighted by apple, pineapple, lemon oil, white flowers, and sea spray. The wine opens with gorgeous sweet apple and pineapple fruit flavors, with vanilla and honeycomb notes. A finely-textured, invigorating mouthfeel, with a generous mid-palate and medium-plus acidity, is framed by crisp fruit and subtle oak-derived flavors. Flinty minerality and refreshing acidity linger on the finish of this lively Chardonnay.
