Joel Gott Washington Red Blend 2015
The 2015 Washington blend has aromas of dark chocolate, cherry, black currant and black raspberry with hints of black licorice and baking spices. The dark fruit flavors on the front of the palate are followed by smooth tannins on the mid-palate, and a long, delicate finish.
To make a well-balanced red wine, we blended Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and a small amount of Malbec from four different appellations in Columbia Valley. Fruit from vineyards in the Red Mountain, Wahluke Slope and Yakima Valley appellations experience desert-like conditions in the winter and spring, where hot days are followed by cool nights. As a result, grapes are smaller with thicker skins, adding complexity to the wine. The Horse Heaven Hills vineyard, planted in the same type of soil, experiences frequent winds throughout the growing season, which stresses the vines. Drip irrigation is used here to produce fruit with intense flavor, giving the wine a balance of sugar and acidity. The 2015 growing season experienced warmer than usual temperatures throughout, resulting in one of the earliest harvests on record, and allowed for fruit with fully mature flavors and intense concentration.
After fermentation, the wine was aged in 75% new American oak and 25% 2-year-old American oak to complement the flavors and tannins of the wine and soften the mid-palate.
