Angove Family Crest Grenache/Shiraz/Mourvèdre 2014
This traditional McLaren Vale blend consists of Grenache and Shiraz grown on the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs, Shiraz from both the south and north slopes of our own Warboys vineyard bordering the creek, and Mourvèdre sourced from Sellicks Beach. This wine is a prime example of how the ancient geology of the McLaren Vale wine region imprints its style on these vineyards, with each variety bringing a unique aspect of the region. The mediterranean-like weather patterns of McLaren Vale perfectly suit these varieties – by day bright sunshine warms the vineyards to ripeness whilst the cooling sea breezes at night retaining freshness. This warm growing season and the heat waves in late January and early February suggested an early vintage but rain on Valentine’s day changed all this and slowed picking down and back to a more normal cycle. Reasonable crops after some hard years and lovely vibrant fl avours will reward wine drinkers.
Each of the three varieties was picked only when they tasted absolutely perfect. Gently plucked from the vines by hand and then carefully crushed and destemmed, each parcel was fermented according to taste. Basket pressing and maturation in mostly used American and French oak barrels followed, with the assemblage coordinated in late August 2014. The fi nal blend is Grenache 55%, Shiraz 25%, and Mourvèdre 20%.
