Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
This Gran Reserva Merlot has an intense deep dark ruby colour. The nose is dominated by blackberry, ripe plums, liquorice and soft roasted coffee hints. Our Gran Reserva Merlot has lots of flesh, round tannins and good structure. The wine has good depth and a vibrant finish with lots of varietal character.
Vineyard Notes
With Merlot’s susceptibility to dehydration, great care is needed to ensure vines have sufficient water, whilst simultaneously providing the roots soils with deep capacity, good structure and good drainage. The soils of our “Quillayes” vineyard in Alto Maipo are perfect for Merlot deep clay loams with good drainage.
Production Notes
The grapes were hand-picked during the last week of April. This Merlot comes from our Estate Vineyards in Alto Maipo Valley, sub appellation Pirque. It’s proximity to the Andes range encourages cool nights to obtain all the aromatic potential needed. The grapes were carefully selected before crushing. Cold maceration at 4º-5ºC took place for 8 days to extract fresh primary aromas and intense colour. Fermentation occurred in stainless steel tanks at 26ºC with selected yeasts. Malolactic Fermentation took place naturally in barrels where 100% of the wine was aged using both French and American oak barrels for 9 months. After bottling, the wine was aged for additional 2 months before its release.
Other Notes
Merlot needs a mild climate to fully develop its flavour profile of blackberries, cloves and roses. A marked temperature difference between day and night is needed to provide good structure. The proximity of our vineyard to the river enables the winds sweeping in from the Andes to moderate day temperatures, and the high altitude helps to effectively cool the area at night. This wine is testament to the Alto Maipo being the ideal terroir for Merlot.
